The Church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary, situated downtown, is the most spacious of the churches of the city. According to the inscription at the entrance, it was „built in 1839, it was radically restored and sanctified on May 27 (The Ascension of Jesus Christ) 1910, in the XLIV year of glorious ruling of His Majesty, King of Romania, Charles I and in the II year as arch-bishop of His Holiness, Bishop of Râmnic and New Severin, D.D. Ghenadie [...]. The necessary funds were donated by the parishioners and by the honors. Caracal City Hall, with honors. Council of Romanaţi county, the late Şerban Jianu, C. Poroineanu, D. Guran, Dincă Popescu, I. Atanasiu and G. Roşca-Balş.“
The portraits of some of them, dressed in rich costumes of the ancient times, are present on the walls of the verandah, painted in oil by the skilled hand of a painter whose name remains unknown. In the area of the verandah, until it was restored and re-sanctified, in 1910, there used to be the tombstones of Costache Jianu-cupbearer, Amza Jianu-cupbearer and Iancu Jianu-nomad. During the repairs, the tombstones of Costache and Amza were integrated in the façade wall, on both sides to the entrance to the porch, and the tombstone of Iancu Jianu was incorporated in the southern wall of the church. On the funeral plate of Iancu Jianu, it is written in the Cyrillic alphabet:
„Under this stone lies, on his wife’s expense, and rests his bones, the late nomad Iancu Jianu, who was born in 1787 and died on December 14, 1842. A true monument of architecture, it is shaped as a cross, it is built in a Greek style, it has three steeples, and the adornments are of Renaissance inspiration. The church has, in its front, a porch with tall columns supporting three-lobed arcades, and on both sides, it is guarded by two steeples built between 1908-1910. The exterior decoration is simple, consisting in a median belt surrounding the church and the cornice with elements in geometric styles, under the roof cupola. The windows are narrow, very tall and designed with stained glass, in metal frames. In front of the church, there used to be, until 1910, a tall tower, known as the Clock Tower, because it held a big clock with three quadrants. In order to create the Iancu Jianu marketplace in front of the church and to open the way towards the city marketplace, that tower was demolished. The original painting of the church is no longer preserved, being covered during the repairs of 1910. The painting has been remade between 1947-1948, with a modern orientation with some inclinations towards the byzantine style, by the painter Tabacu. We must particularly specify the interior furniture, manufactured between 1907-1910 by the artist Ştefan Malciu, from Oltenia, famous for his art of wood processing. The iconostasis made of oaken wood is a real work of art, and in the adornments of the lecterns, arm chairs, frames for icons overlaid with silver, the artist used motives from the popular art of wood workers.
The biggest part of the church adornments represent a donation from Jianu family, bearing different inscriptions written in the Cyrillic alphabet of the first half of XIX century, with the names of the builders and of the donors.
In 2006, out of the initiative of the Association of Former Political Prisoners, Olt county branch, in the church courtyard was erected a memorial cross. This church is served by Vicar Iagăru Aurel and Priest II Enache Păstorel. The church is in the list of historical monuments with the identification code OT-II-m-B-08770.
