Saint Nicholas Church, built downtown Caracal, at the junction of Plevnei street with 1 Decembrie 1918 street, Saint Nicholas church, by the constructive system, by the religious painting and by the church art objects that it possesses, is a monument of religious architecture giving our city the power of an ancient establishment of the Romanati residents raised in Love for God.
The current St. Nicholas Church was built in 1863 by the priest Ioan Economu, in the place of a smaller and older one „built in 1770“ by the priest Mihail of Gostavăţ. The inscription at the entrance into the church, above the door, was restored and completed with new data, mentioning the history of the religious monument until 1984.
„With the will of the Father, with the help of the Son and with the work of the Holy Spirit, this holy and godly church was built in the place of a smaller church, celebrating the Saint Patron Nicholas, out of the initiative of his holiness, Ioan Economu. Works were completed in 1895. The wall painting, in oil technique, was executed by the painter Costache Petrescu – Craiova, and the iconostasis was painted by the painter Mihail Dragomirescu of Bucharest. In 1925, repairs have been made and the painter Velici – Turnu Severin restored it and executed the adornments. Following the earthquake of March 4, 1977, [...] with the donations and contributions of the parishioners and of other believers, it was consolidated with reinforced concrete belts, and in 1984 the painting was renewed.“
Beginning with 1990, the exterior of the church was rebuilt, in marble dust, and on the inside, the floor was replaced with mosaic. St. Nicholas Church is a spacious building in the shape of a cross, the interior painting in neo-byzantine style is of rare refinement and expression.
The treasure of this church consists in the temple, the royal arm chair, the pulpit and two icon supports sculpted in wood, of a very rare execution, „brought directly from Paris by colonel Vlădoianu“, in memory of his deceased daughter, Stela Vlădoianu.
In the wide churchyard, there are three funeral monuments, one made of stone and built in 1832, which says „Here lie Dumitru Greceanu and Zoe, his wife, of Racoviceanu family, who died in March 1832 and August 1832“.
The white marble monument has been dedicated to Stela Vlădoianu, deceased in 1872 at only 18 years of age, and on the tombstone, a long rhymed dedication has been written, of which here are a few of the verses:
„O red flower, Paled by the sun, O young child, whose name was Stela,
Whom Death has taken too soon“
The third tomb belongs to priest Ion G. Vasile, dead in a tragic accident occurred in 2004.
This church is served by the priest of Caracal Protopopiate, his holiness, Priest Răducan I. Marin and Priest II Constantin Romel. The church is on the list of historic monuments with identification number OT-II-m-B-08774.
